How does offset steer a caster?

When the contact patch trails the swivel axis, forward motion produces a moment that rotates the fork toward the travel direction. If the wheel begins sideways, the same geometry produces the scrub and rotation felt during caster alignment.

What are the tradeoffs?

Increasing offset can improve steering leverage, but it increases the space swept by the wheel and can raise mounting moments. Reducing offset may make the package compact while requiring more force to swivel under load.
